Garbh Sanskar:Food To Eat: Part IV

A diet is called nutritious when it contains proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals in needed amount.

Iodine plays an important role in regulating your thyroid gland and your metabolism – the rate at which your body uses energy.

In pregnancy, iodine also helps your baby's brain and nervous system develop. In fact, iodine deficiencies are the single most important cause of preventable mental retardation and brain damage worldwide. A lack of iodine during pregnancy has also been linked with an increased risk of miscarriage, preterm delivery, and stillbirth.

Iodine Rich Foods To Eat During Pregnancy

  • Eggs
  • Apples
  • Oranges
  • Grapes
  • Strawberries
  • Salt

Milk and dairy products are the main sources of iodine for most people Iodine you need:

  • Pregnant women: about 220 micrograms (mcg) of iodine per day
  • Breastfeeding women: about 290 mcg
  • You don't have to get the recommended amount of iodine every day. Instead, aim for that amount as an average over the course of a few days or a week.
  • 1 cup milk: 56 mcg
  • 1/2 cup strawberries: 6 mcg

It is dangerous to have too little or too much iodine. During pregnancy, iodine is essential for the correct development of the baby’s brain.

During pregnancy, the amount of iodine you need increases. This is because you have to make sufficient thyroid hormones to transfer to your baby to help its brain develop correctly. You also supply all the iodine that the baby needs. Iodine deficiency in pregnancy may have serious consequences for your child so it is very important that you meet the higher iodine requirement if you are pregnant. Breastfeeding mums still need a higher amount of iodine, so their breast milk has enough iodine for their baby. This is because the brain is still developing at that early stage.

A low intake of iodine over a long period of time may cause your thyroid to work harder to keep the right amount of thyroid hormones in your blood. This can mean that your thyroid increases in size in order to trap iodine; this swelling - or ‘goitre’ - may be visible in your neck. It is more likely that having too little iodine in your diet will lead to low levels of thyroid hormones. If you have a deficiency of iodine when you are pregnant, your baby’s brain may not develop as well as it could and this could affect your child’s ability to learn in later years; for instance, your child could have a lower IQ or poorer reading ability.
